We’re a purveyor of electric cars in New Zealand, usually in the more affordable range. However, even we like to cast our eyes over the luxury models once in a while, and we certainly know a thing or two about what makes an electric car a solid purchase.

So, this blog post is going to take you through some of the best luxury models on the market today – the good, the bad, and the almost unbelievable.

There are a couple of models to talk about from Tesla – the Model S and the Model X. Both have their individualities, their quirks, and it’s these little things that make would make them the ideal buy, depending on your lifestyle.

The Tesla Model S

There are a lot of things to say about the Model S, almost all of them good. It’s an industry leader for a reason, after all. If you’re able to shell out the exorbitant price that this car will cost you, the benefits to you are almost endless.

The beauty takes you almost 600km on one charge, which is far and away the industry leader in the luxury market. However, keep in mind that only holds up for the long-range battery options, there is also a standard range option that will fetch you a good 350km range. Still not too shoddy.

Not only that, the performance model will take you to 100km/hr in 2.4 seconds – the fastest acceleration on Earth - while the long-range model accelerates to 100km/hr in 3.7 seconds. That’s not just fantastic electrical efficiency we’re talking about here; it’s almost-perfect performance. The car also features twelve ultrasonic sensors that give the driver a full 360-degree view, aiding with parking and preventing collisions.

The Model X

The Model X carries all of Tesla’s trademark style, class, and performance and puts it in a family-sized vehicle.

Room for seven as well as a 5-star safety rating make this car perfect for carting the family around. Additionally, it boasts front and side impact protection and a weighted chassis for the lowest rollover risk they could achieve. There’s also all of the storage you could ever want hiding in this car, making it an excellent utility vehicle for the family ski trip to Ruapehu.

The Model X is also another killer for range! Raking in 525km come from a single charge, this makes the Model X the titleholder for longest electric range of any sports utility vehicle available today, and a supercharge will take you 185km in 15 minutes. It features the same ultrasonic sensors from the Model S, and the performance model will go from 0 to 100km/h in 2.7 seconds. That’s still among the fastest accelerating cars in the world.

The BMW i3s

The i3s is a little bit of an oddball, mostly because it took the design expectations of the luxury car world and threw them out of the window. It’s compact, blunt, and perfect for winding, narrow city streets. In fact, this BMW wouldn’t look out of place among the Fiats in Italy, and that’s what makes it so distinctive and interesting.

With zero emissions and a daily use electric range of 200km, this car is a real sporty gem. Its luxurious nature shows through in its performance – 0 to 100km/h in 6.9s, and a maximum speed of 160 km/h. We love this car for its versatility and unique style, which is aimed at improving the performance of a fully-electric drivetrain as much as possible. It also makes a fantastic rental car if you’re ever abroad and need an electric car lease.

If you’re looking into your options in luxury electric vehicles, it’s virtually impossible to find a better city-ready lean, green machine.

The Jaguar i-Pace

And finally, we have an heirloom. There are many people in this world who, as they’ve grown up, wanted a Jaguar sitting in their garage and for good reason! The brand is known for its crisp luxury and high-end performance, but more than that, a Jaguar exudes a poise that speaks to hidden power.

And now, zero-emissions drivers can access that same aura, with the i-Pace.

Boasting a whopping 0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds, an incredibly smooth range of 470km (which is up there in terms of the market today), and a seamless design – it’s no wonder this car was dubbed the 2019 World Car of the Year. It also has a multitude of options for accessories that makes the family road trip more accessible, as this car is indeed family friendly. Expansive storage and a 5-star safety rating will assure any parent of the car’s safety, and whoever is the behind the wheel will get to enjoy the quiet power of the Jaguar’s drivetrain.

Undeniably an amazing option for anyone looking into the luxury electric car market.

At the end of the day, your choice depends on you and the needs you have in life – these are some of the best contenders in the 2019 luxury electric market, but who knows? Next year may bring even more.
